Posted by Craig on May 27th, 2017

North Cave came out on top with a winning draw away to Cottingham II in today’s York Senior League Division 4 Holderness match. Cottingham won the toss and elected to bowl first in a match reduced to 40 overs a side. Craig Hewson (12) and John Backhouse (6) made a steady start before both were dismissed and when Mike Stellings (11) was out, Cave were on 35 for 3. Charlie Cockin (22) and Jacob Lacey (20) added 30 for the fourth wicket, but then Cave lost wickets steadily as they struggled to 109 for 9. M. Legard (3 for 18), R. Easter (2 for 27) and D. Weston (2 for 42) taking the wickets. A last wicket stand of 36 between Chris Short (38) and Karl Youngman (14 not out) pushed Cave’s total to a competitive 145 all out in their 40 overs. In reply Cottingham started well and Syed Kazmi (37) and S. Dunkerley (10) opened with a stand of 27. Mike Stellings (1 for 22) had Dunkerley LBW and then Craig Hewson with a spell of 10-4-14-6, ripped the middle order out of the Cottingham batting and with ┬áJohn Buttle (2 for 30), reduced them to 77 for 9. C. Pitcher (25 not out) and R. Easter (3 not out) batted out the final 10 overs to see Cottingham to a losing draw on 102 for 9 after their 40 overs. It was a good all around performance from a vastly changed North Cave side with everyone contributing.

Cave Beat HICE II in Low Scoring Match

Posted by Craig on May 20th, 2017

North Cave came out on top in a tense low scoring match at home to HICE II in today’s York Senior League Division 4 Holderness match. The match was interrupted on several occasions due to the frequent showers. It was a credit to both sides to get the game finished in difficult conditions. Cave won the toss and put HICE in to bat. D. Kemp (10) and D. Burnett (12) started well adding 15 before Mike Stellings (2 for 34) removed Burnett. Peter Pearson (1 for 0) dismissed Kemp, but could only manage one over before injury forced a change. A. Littlefair (21) was top scorer as HICE struggled against John Buttle (3 for 21) and Jonathan Tomlinson (4 for 10). HICE lost wickets at regular intervals and limped to 86 all out in 44 overs. In reply Cave lost Ed Sheffield early before Craig Hewson (10) and Mike Stellings (20) steadied the innings adding 35. P. Hawthorn (5 for 34) and James Smith (1 for 23) removed both in consecutive overs and then Cave lost 3 more wickets to P. Hawthorn’s slow turning deliveries on a damp drying pitch. Declan Pearson (9 not out) and man of the match Jonathan Tomlinson (27) got the innings back on course before Tomlinson hit some lusty blows to the boundary to relieve the nerves. He was out with the scores level and a scrambled bye took Cave to a 3 wicket win in 25.5 overs.

Posted by Craig on May 13th, 2017

Ten-man North Cave lost out to a young Beverley IV team in today’s York & District Senior Cricket League Division 4 Holderness match at North Cave. Cave won the toss and put Beverley in to bat in overcast drizzling conditions. Beverley got off to a good start with K. Thompson (14) and M. Hudson (24) adding 33 before Karl Youngman ran out Thompson. Declan Pearson (2 for 24) took two wickets with Pete Pearson (1 for 29) one wicket to leave Beverley 49 for 4. A partnership of 21 between Graeme Taylor (39) and H. Hudson (7) pushed the total on, but they were restricted by tight bowling from John Buttle (2 for 30) and Jonathan Tomlinson (2 for 36). Charlie Bough added 16 at the end as Karl Youngman (2 for 4) took the final two wickets to dismiss Beverley for 128 in 44.3 overs. In reply the Cave innings never got going against Beverley’s young bowling attack in better conditions. Only Declan Pearson (16) made double figures as the batsmen struggled. Charlie Bough was the star with the ball for Beverley taking 5 for 24, as he ripped out the Cave middle order.

Hessle Concede First Match

Posted by Craig on May 5th, 2017

Unfortunately, Hessle CC 2nd XI have been unable to raise a team for tomorrow’s York & District Senior Cricket League Division 4 Holderness match and so have conceded the match to North Cave, who win by walkover. It is a disappointing start to the season with it being North Cave’s first match of the 2017 campaign, after a free week on last week’s opening weekend. The clash with Hull City being at home has made it difficult for a number of sides this week. From Cave’s point of view, it has been a winter of rebuilding the playing squad with a number of players leaving for various reasons. We have a number of welcome new additions to the club and this gives us renewed optimism for the season ahead. Next week will see us at home to Beverley Town 4th XI.
