Comfortable Win at Melbourne

North Cave had a comfortable victory in today’s York Vale League Division 1 match. North Cave won the toss and put Melbourne in to bat. Openers T. Blackmore (6) and J. Coupland (16) started well and with the help of several extras, put on 39 for the first wicket. The Cave bowlers then gained control with Mike Stellings taking 5 for 31 from his 12 overs with 5 maidens and John Buttle also bowling 5 maidens in 9.4 overs taking 2 for 14. The bowlers were aided by some excellent fielding and catching. Rob Page (2 for 19) took 2 wickets to reduce Melbourne to 73 for 9, but a last wicket stand of 28 between D. Coe (16) and R. Miller (12 not out) saw them to 101 all out. In reply Charlie Cockin (61 not out) took the attack to the Melbourne bowlers and despite losing Damian Sharp (6) with the score on 19, Cockin and Mike Stellings (35 not out) saw Cave to a 9 wicket win in 16 overs.

Cave Lose to Ferriby in Final League Match

North Ferriby beat North Cave in tonight’s final Howdenshire League match of the season. Ferriby won the toss and batted first. Their innings was held together by Mike McNally (52) while early wickets fell at the other end. Oliver Brett (3 for 16) bowled six great overs and Chris Short (2 for 39) also took wickets as Ferriby fell to 61 for 6. Cave mixed up their bowling attack and Rob Hodson took advantage hitting a beligerent 55 not out and he was aided by Billy Astill (18 not out). Ferriby finished their 20 overs on 169 for 7. In reply Hodson’s first ball went for 5 wides and then he had Rhys Duerden caught off the second. Ashley Page (18) and Charlie Cockin (20) put on 39 before both fell in successive overs with the score on 44. Simon Cooke (17) and James Windeatt (34) led the attack, but Hodson (2 for 30) and Billy Astill (2 for 15) pegged Cave back and they finished on 130 for 7, 39 runs short.

Cave Beat Ben Johnson in Run Fest

It was a run fest at North Cave in today’s York Vale Division 1 match, against Ben Johnson, as over 500 runs were scored. North Cave Won the toss and batted first. they got off to a great start with James Windeatt’s first three scoring shots going for 6. Windeatt (62) and opening partner Charlie Cockin (35) put on 98 for the first wicket as they hit the Ben Johnson bowlers to all parts. S. Wragg (2 for 77) then hit back removing both openers in the same over. Mike Stellings and Will Ferguson came together and the pair remained unbeaten through to the end of the innings and both hit centuries. Will Ferguson (115 not out) got to three figures first hitting three 6’s and twelve 4’s and then Stellings (105 not out) reached his century with two 6’s and thirteen 4’s. They added 217 runs as Cave finished on 315 for 2 from their 40 overs. In reply P. Anderson (69) and J. Phillips (27) played well to keep Ben Johnson up with the run rate and had an opening partnership of 95. Phillips then retired hurt after pulling a hamstring when diving home running a two. James Windeatt (1 for 51) then removed Martin Reynolds and Anderson was well caught by sub fielder Richard Tomlinson off John Buttle (2 for 43). S. Wragg (30) and S. Carlton (26) hit late runs, but Mike Stellings (2 for 13) and Simon Cooke (2 for 14) removed the tail to leave Ben Johnson on 197 all out, 118 runs short.

Cave Win Mortimer Cup

North Cave beat North Ferriby in this evening’s Mortimer Cup Final played at Hemingbrough. Cave won the toss and batted first. Openers Jack Storey (28) and James Windeatt (35) started well and put on 61 for the first wicket. Matt Wilkinson pushed the Cave run rate forward with 37, but then Jake Astill (1 for 25) and Kenny Donaldson (4 for 4) pegged Cave back with late wickets, backed up with some excellent fielding, to restrict them to 133 for 8 from their 20 overs. In reply, Ferriby also started well with John Auld (26) and Jake Astill (20) sharing an opening stand of 29, helped by some wayward Cave bowling. Cave hit back with Ashley Page (1 for 32) and Matt Wilkinson (1 for 30) taking a wicket each. Kenny Donaldson (24) and Auld added 46 and had Ferriby on target for victory at the half-way point, but then Auld and M. Hudson were run out. Jack Storey (3 for 24) and Mike Stellings (1 for 28) tied the Ferriby batsmen down and took wickets to build pressure on the late order batsmen. Ferriby finished 14 runs short as they were 119 for 8 at the end. Cave were presented with the trophy by League Secretary Steve Clarke and Matt Wilkinson was named the Man of the Match by the two umpires.

Cave Lose HPH Cup Semi-Final at Bishopthorpe

North Cave slipped to defeat in today’s HPH Cup Semi-Final away at Bishopthorpe. Bishopthorpe won the toss and put Cave into bat. Cave lost the two early wickets of Rob Page and Damian Sharp, but Mike Stellings (47) and Will Ferguson (56) led the recovery adding 93 for the third wicket. James Windeatt (40) and Ferguson put on 44 before M. Riley (3 for 32) removed both. Ian Holmes (4 for 33) took 4 late wickets for Bishopthorpe as Cave finished on 170 for 9 from their 40 overs. In reply Mike Stellings bowled a great opening spell of 10-3-12-3 and had Bishopthorpe struggling on 25 for 3. Then Scott Clapham (90 not out) shared partnerships of 39 with Ben Smith (14), 40 with Ian Holmes (21) and an unbeaten stand of 68 with S. Davies (13 not out) as they saw Bishopthorpe home by 5 wickets with 21 balls to spare.
