Cave Beat Table Topping Ovington

North Cave kept the York Vale Division 1 title race open with victory away at leaders Ovington. Ovington batted first on a testing wicket. They made slow progress with Olly Brett (4 for 26) and John Buttle (2 for 33 from 12 overs) taking early wickets to reduce Ovington to 31 for 4. B. Morrison (10) and S. Tremayne (35) added 43 for the fifth wicket and N. Metcalfe (19) added late runs, but they lost wickets at regular intervals. Mike Stellings (1 for 25 from 12 overs) and Karl Youngman (3 for 26) took the remaining wickets to bowl Ovington out for 117. Cave in reply struggled early with the bowling of Barry Steel (3 for 34 from 12 overs) and N. Metcalfe (1 for 24 from 11 overs) and at 38 for 5 looked in trouble. Mike Stellings (38 not out) dug in and anchored the innings and he was joined at the wicket by James Windeattt (53 not out). The pair added an unbeaten 81 runs to take Cave to a 5 wicket win and keep the title race going for another week.

Cave Ease to Comfortable Victory at Home

North Cave had a comfortable victory at home to Fulfordgate in today’s York Vale League Match. North Cave won the toss and put Fulfordgate into bat. They got off to a slow start with John Buttle (1 for 23 from 12 overs) and Oliver Brett (1 for 35 from 10 overs) bowling tight spells. J. Husband (14) and A. Baldock (28) opened with a stand of 29, but then wickets fell at regular intervals. L. Hansey (48 not out) anchored the Fulfordgate innings, but he had little support as Mike Stellings (5 for 32) ripped out the middle order with Frazer Welsh taking 3 catches. Fulfordgate reached 100 all out from 36.1 overs. In reply Cave lost the early wicket of Craig Hewson with the score on 7, before John Backhouse (40 not out) and Mark Woodall (20) took the score to 38. Then Simon Cooke (34) joined Backhouse and the pair took Cave to within 4 runs of victory when Cooke was run out. Cave ran out comfortable winners by 7 wickets finishing 102 for 3.

The Rain Wins the Day at Bishopthorpe

In a match reduced to 28 overs due to the rain, North Cave won the toss and batted first in todays York Vale League match away at Bishopthorpe. They got off to a flying start with Rob Page (32) taking the attack to the Bishopthorpe bowlers and he added 34 for the first wicket with John Backhouse. Bishopthorpe hit back with three quick wickets before Mike Stellings (34) and Mark Woodall (45 not out) shared a 75 run partnership. Woodall and Simon Cooke (24) put on 28 to see Cave to 153 for 5 from their 28 overs. Ian Holmes 1 for 21 from 8 overs was the pick of the Bishopthorpe bowlers. In reply Mike Stellings (1 for 30) removed M. Dale early before R. Kelly (20) and S. Clapham (24 not out) started the recovery adding 32. John Buttle (2 for 25) took two quick wickets before Ian Holmes (10 not out) joined Clapham. The pair added 21 before rain brought a premature end to the proceedings and the match was abandoned.

Cave Back to Winning Ways

North Cave got back to winning ways with a home victory over Askham Bryan in todays York Vale League match. Askham Bryan won the toss and put Cave in to bat. Openers Mike Stellings (36) and Craig Hewson (75) got Cave off to a good start with a stand of 67, despite some tight early bowling from P. Thornton (0 for 49). Rob Page (60) then joined Hewson and the pair added 109 for the second wicket to put Cave in a commanding position. M. Grewer (3 for 38) hit back with three wickets before some late hitting from Mark Woodall (34) took Cave to 222 for 5. In reply John Buttle (2 for 35) took two early wickets, but then D. Wheeler (62) and Satish Sishath (58) hit back adding 113 and putting Askham in touch with the run rate. Mike Stellings (5 for 52) and James Windeatt (1 for 38) ripped out the Askham middle order and only M. Grewer (27) offered to keep Askham in the hunt, before two late run outs saw them all out for 193. Cave ran out winners by 29 runs.

Nine Man Cave Well Beaten at Burn

North Cave again playing with only nine men were well beaten away at Burn in today’s York Vale League match. Burn won the toss and batted first. Ray Adamson (10) and Lee Adamson opened with 38 for the first wicket as Mike Stellings (1 for 44) and John Buttle (0 for 42) started tightly. Then N. Elliott (72) joined Lee Adamson and the pair took advantage of some indifferent bowling from Cave’s depleted attack and the spaces in the field. They added 180 runs for the second wicket and Lee Adamson (107) hit 4 sixes and 14 fours in a superb century to put Burn in a commanding position. Chris Colbeck (2 for 36) took 2 late wickets and wicket-keeper Mark Woodall ran out three batsmen with direct throws as Burn finished on 249 for 6. In reply Cave started brightly, but lost the first wicket on 31. Mike Stellings (19) and Rob Page (49) put on 33 and then Page added 53 with Tom Baxter (23). All the Burn bowlers took wickets as 9-man Cave were dismissed for 156. Burn running out winners by 93 runs.
