Cave Ease to Evening Win

Posted by Craig on April 30th, 2013

North Cave eased to a comfortable 10 wicket win at home to Newport in the Triad Howdenshire Evening League. Cave won the toss and put Newport in to bat. Openers B. Jones (10) and I. Stamper (10) added 20 for the first wicket and Josh Chapman (27) looked in good form as he and A. Mitchell (21) added important runs. Wickets from Ashley Page (2 for 12) and John Buttle (3 for 28) restricted Newport and then Karl Youngman (2 for 16) took wickets at the end as Newport finished their 20 overs on 95 for 8. In reply the total never looked enough as James Windeatt hit a quick fire 78 not out, including 5 sixes and 7 fours. He was supported by Charlie Cockin (16 not out) as Cave needed only 9.1 overs to win.

Cave Begin Defence with Win at Hirst

Posted by Craig on April 27th, 2013

North Cave began the 2013 defence of their HPH York Vale League title with an away win at Hirst Courtney. Hirst won the toss and batted first. They got off to a good start with P. Alford (30) and N. Goddard (17) putting on 26. C. Lawson hit a superb 65 mixing big hitting with sensible batting. He added 59 with Alford and 51 with J. Wild (23). For Cave J. Buttle (1 for 28) kept things tight early and then Rob Page (3 for 44) and 17 year old Oliver Brett (3 for 24), making his debut, took vital wickets at the end to restrict Hirst to 166 for 8. In reply J. Wild (1 for 24) and G. Knight (2 for 36) bowled a great opening spell and made scoring difficult. John Backhouse (53) anchored the innings before Simon Cooke hit 52 including some stylish cover drives. Cave ran out winners by 5 wickets as Hirst’s support bowlers struggled to contain the Cave batsmen.

Pre-Season Tour Match

Posted by Craig on April 17th, 2013

The 2013 season is only a couple of weeks away and North Cave CC went on tour last weekend to play Ashworth CC at Maghull near Liverpool. Unfortunately, the cricket was spoilt by the inclement weather with a 20 over match played in steady drizzle. Ashworth won the toss and batted first. They lost early wickets with guest player Russell Brennan taking 3 wickets. Opener L. Kelly scored 18 and contributions from K. Costigan (27) and R. Hooton (16) down the order got Ashworth to 113 all out. Charlie Cockin taking 4 for 22 at the end for Cave who held on to the majority of their catches well in the conditions. In reply a quick fire innings from Matt Johnson (26), before he retired, got Cave off to a great start. The innings was anchored by Gavin Quantock who was unbeaten on 18 at the end and he gave great support to Richard Moore (27 Retired). James Ferguson (25 not out) finished the match in style with some impressive boundaries taking Cave to a 7 wicket win.

Despite the weather the Ashworth lads provided great hospitality and the match was played in great spirit. It then turned into a long night for some of the lads who decided to sample the Liverpool nightlife, although they were not so energetic on the journey home the next day.
