Cave Slump to First Defeat

North Cave slumped to their first defeat of the season away to Welton & Brough this evening. Cave batted first, but found the going difficult against the bowling of Neil Thompson (1 for 25) and Luke Hills (2 for 17). Only James Windeatt (22) and Charlie Cockin (27 not out) offered any resistance as Rhys Duerden (2 for 10) took 2 wickets in successive balls. Cave could only manage 79 for 6 from their 20 overs. In reply S. Mobbs (40) and Michael Vaughan (11) put on a quick 40 runs for the first wicket. Then Jack Storey (3 for 17) and Rob Page (3 for 19) had Welton in trouble, but in the end dropped catches cost Cave as Welton won by 4 wickets at 80 for 6.

Cave Progress in HPH Cup

North Cave made progress through the 1st round of the HPH Cup with a comfortable victory away to Ben Johnson at Escrick Park, in defence of the cup they won last season. Ben Johnson won the toss and batted first on a good pitch. They got off to a slow start with Richard Tomlinson (1 for 24) and Mike Stellings (1 for 28) bowling tight. C. Hyde (29) and F. Raper (24) added 37 for the third wicket before John Buttle (4 for 14) and Rob Page (1 for 31) dismissed the middle order and Karl Youngman (2 for 25) took late wickets to restrict Ben Johnson to 137 for 9 from their 40 overs. In reply an opening stand of 48 between Craig Hewson (38) and Jon Backhouse (9) laid the foundations and then Mike Stellings (45 not out) and Rob Page (36) saw Cave to a comfortable win in the 29th over.

Cave Progress to Cup Semi-Final

North Cave won this evening’s Mortimer Cup 1st Round tie at home to Hemingbrough by 59 runs. Cave batted first and Ashley Page (18) and Jack Storey (21) put on 35 for the first wicket. Matty Clark (3 for 33) pegged Cave back, but James Ferguson (26) and Mike Stellings (24) move the score along. Tom Collins (4 for 9) and Liam Hallam (2 for 30) restricted Cave who were bowled out for 115 with 3 balls remaining of the innings. In reply the Hemingbrough innings never got started and Rob Page (3 for 17) took early wickets. Only Glen Crouch (22) made double figures before Mike Stellings (3 for 2) and Ashley Page (2 for 7) dismissed the remaining Hemingbrough batsmen for 56.

Cave Continue Winning Start

North Cave had a comfortable win in today’s York Vale League Division 1 match at Stockton & Hopgrove. Stockton & Hopgrove won the toss and put Cave in to Bat. Openers Mike Stellings (84 not out) and Craig Hewson (46) were both dropped before putting on a partnership of 105. Then James Windeatt came to the crease and hit five 6’s in his 66 to take Cave to 207 for 2 after their 40 overs. 17 year old M. Durkin bowled 12 excellent overs taking 1 for 35. In reply G. Smith (32) got Stockton off to a fast start, but once he was out Stockton lost wickets at regular intervals as Richard Tomlinson (2 for 24) and John Buttle (3 for 51) restricted them. M. Durkin rounded off a good performance with 48, but Mike Stellings (0 for 18 from 9 overs) and Rob Page (4 for 17) saw Cave to a 76 run victory.

Cave Through to Cup 1st Round

North Cave had a comfortable victory at Newport this evening in the preliminary round of the Mortimer Cup. Cave won the toss and put Newport in to bat. They made a slow start and James Windeatt (2 for 14) and Charlie Cockin (1 for 28) bowled tight spells to restrict Newport’s scoring. Only A. Mitchell with a quickfire 29 added impetus to the innings to take Newport to 107 for 7. Danny Hague (2 for 20) took late wickets. In reply Jack Storey (13) got early runs before Cave lost 3 wickets for 47. Then Mike Woodford (25 not out) and James Windeatt (53 not out) added an unbeaten 63 to see Cave home by 7 wickets with 16 balls to spare.
