North Cave win Local Derby

North Cave won the local derby in tonight’s Howdenshire Evening League match at South Cave by 6 wickets. North Cave won the toss and put South Cave in to bat. They got off to a steady start with an opening stand of 69 between R. Little (19) and A. Iyer (48), but the run rate was kept in check by Karl Youngman (0 for 27 from 6 overs) and Chris Short (0 for 27 in 6 overs). Rob Page (3 for 16) joined the attack and removed both openers as well as A. Griffiths first ball. P. Mountfield (14) tried to increase the tempo late on before being caught by Craig Hewson off the bowling of Matthew Hatfield (1 for 23). In reply North Cave got off to a good start with Rhys Duerden (21) and Charlie Cockin (19) adding 35. Mark Woodall then hit a quick fire 34 to see North Cave to a 6 wicket win in 15 overs for their first League win of the season.

Cave Record First League Win

North Cave recorded the first win of the York Vale League campaign today away to Ben Johnson at Escrick Park. Ben Johnson won the toss and batted first. Their innings was built around J. Agnew (40) with support from T. Hill (17) and D. Snowden (12), but they lost wickets at regular intervals. Richard Tomlinson took 4 for 31 from his 12 overs and he was backed up by Chris Short who bowled a tight spell of 12 overs for 30 runs. Jonathan Tomlinson (3 for 31) and Craig Hewson (3 for 24) then finished off the tail to restrict Ben Johnson to 122 all out. In reply Ben Johnson took the early wickets of Mark Woodall and John Backhouse before a match winning partnership of 97 between Charlie Cockin (25 not out) and Captain James Ferguson (77 not out), who played a superb knock to see Cave home by 8 wickets in the 22nd over. Cave are still bottom of Division 1, but this win puts them back in contact with the sides above them.

South Cave Win Local Derby

South Cave won this evening’s local derby in the first round of the Mortimer Cup. South Cave batted first and J. Griffiths (14) and A. Iyer (18) laid the foundations before P. Mountfield rode his luck before reaching 62 not out. A Late flurry of boundaries from A. Griffiths (28 not out) took South Cave to 161 for 6. A poor fielding and catching performance from North Cave cost them valuable runs. In reply North Cave slumped to 26 for 5  with J. Gorbutt (3 for 18) and A. Griffiths (2 for 25) taking the wickets. Mark Woodall (38) and Rob Page (29) made the North Cave total respectable, but they finished 110 for 7 from their 20 overs and 51 runs short.

Captain Page Powers Cave to First Win

A magnificent Century from Rob Page saw Cave win their first game of the season away to Burn in the 1st Round of the HPH Cup. Burn won the toss and batted first. They lost an early wicket to the bowling of Jake McMullen, before A. Watson (48) and T. Rich took the score to 50. Richard Tomlinson (4 for 25) then pegged back the Burn middle order with a tight 10 over spell. A. Abbott (16), J. Webster (15) and G. Beevers (24 not out) added useful runs at the end of the innings as Burn finished on 184 for 9. McMullen (2 for 44), Craig Hewson (2 for 47) and Jonathan Tomlinson (1 for 50) kept the Burn score in check on a small ground and fast outfield. The Cave innings was built on a 139 run partnership between John Backhouse (33) and a superb Captain’s innings of 103 not out from Rob Page, who saw Cave home to a six wicket win with 8.2 overs to spare. His century included 3 sixes and 14 fours and was brought up with a six over mid-wicket. R. Miller and G. Parker both took two wickets for Burn.

HICE Edge Close Encounter

HICE came out on top in a very close run match at North Cave this Evening by 4 runs. Cave won the toss and put HICE into bat. Jake McMullen took the early wicket of D. Luscombe (8), before G. Van Es (21) and D. Burnett (41 not out) took the score to 39. Burnett then added 60 with W. Parker (36) to help HICE to a total of 115 for 4 from their 20 overs. The Cave reply was built around Mark Woodall’s 67 not out, but the HICE bowlers took regular wickets to keep the run rate in check. Barry Young (2 for 27) and D. Kemp (2 for 14) doing the damage as Cave fell just 4 runs short at the end.
