Posted by Craig on April 30th, 2011

North Cave slumped to their second defeat of the season as Wheldrake won this match by 5 wickets, played in very windy conditions at Wheldrake. Cave got off to a poor start losing early wickets before Chris Carr (14) started a fightback, but Cave slipped to 48 for 5 with D. Fearn, L. Fearn and M. Mellor all taking wickets. Then Charlie Cockin (45) and John Buttle (16) put on 69 for the sixth wicket to take Cave to 117 before C. Walker took a hatrick and then took the final wicket to finish with 4 for 8 and dismiss Cave for 126. In Reply Craig Hewson (2 for 18) and Jonathan Tomlinson (1 for 26) took early wickets as Wheldrake were reduced to 11 for 3, but a faultless innings from C. Walker (75 not out) rounded off a Man of the Match performance to see Wheldrake home with 4 overs to spare. He was ably supported by W. Freeman (20) and A. Quinn (12 not out). Chris Short (1 for 42) bowled a great spell without any luck and John Buttle (1 for 27) kept things tight, but it was not enough.

Poor Start for Cave with Defeat to Bishopthorpe

Posted by Craig on April 23rd, 2011

North Cave got off to a poor start to the season with an opening day 61 run defeat at home to Bishopthorpe. Despite an early run out of M. Whitmore by Matt Johnson, Bishopthorpe got off to a great start and G. Markham (69) and B. Smith (55) did not give the Cave Bowlers a chance. S. Reeves (26 not out) hit some late blows to take Bishopthorpe to 207 for 5. For Cave Jonathan Tomlinson (2 for 56) and John Buttle (0 for 40) both from 12 overs toiled away. In reply Mark Woodall hit a quick 32 in the first six overs and Cave kept up with the run rate with Rob Page (34) And Richard Moore (22) scoring freely, while John Backhouse (20) anchored the innings with a patient 20. However, the Bishopthorpe bowlers Ian Holmes (3 for 35), T. Eckart (2 for41), R. Kelly (2 for 21) and C. Featherstone (3 for 21) all took important wickets to restrict Cave to 146 all out to win by 61 runs. Cave will be hoping for a better performance away at Wheldrake next Saturday.
