2010 Season Summary

Posted by Craig on September 13th, 2010

Again the summer has come and gone in the blink of an eye and the cricket season has ended. Without a hint of match fixing or of a betting scandal, Cave have had a good first season in the top division of the HPH York Vale League, finishing in third place. We were in the hunt for the title right up to the penultimate game of the season, before losing the last couple of games as player availability became an issue. Hemingbrough came out on top with Burn in second place. The weather has also been kind this year with only 3 Saturday matches lost and the outfield resembling a desert at times. We even had to water the pitch and that has not happened for a few years.

The season got underway with a comfortable home win over Barmby Moor. The match winner was Richard Tomlinson who scored 42 and then took 6 for 18 to blow the opposition batting away. The games away to Hemingbrough and Burn were casualties to the weather, with a home win over Wheldrake sandwiched in between. Cave scoring 209 for 5 with half centuries from Craig Hewson (53) and Captain Rob Page (50) before John Buttle’s 5 for 38 saw us to a 76 run victory. The first defeat came against Copmanthorpe by 53 runs as they ran up 206 for 7. Bishopthorpe then won by 76 runs after scoring 206 for 6 and the Cave batting failing again. After this, Cave lost only one of the next nine games as they found their feet. Heworth were blown away at their place as they were dismissed for 86 with Richard Tomlinson and Andrew Ferguson taking three wickets each. James Ferguson’s belligerent 54 not out saw Cave home in just 15 overs. James was again man of the match at home to Clifton Alliance where his 63 saw Cave to a four wicket win, chasing down 196. University of York Staff were dismissed for 99 and Mark Woodall hit a superb 67 not out to win in 13 overs. Hemingbrough suffered their first defeat of the season at Cave by 45 runs. Cave posted 167 all out before Hemingbrough were bowled out for 122 with Craig Hewson 4 for 22 and James Ferguson 4 for 28 doing the damage. Then we had a very costly slip up at Wheldrake, where a poor performance saw a six wicket defeat. The only resistance coming from Chris Carr with 37. We were soon back on track with a great performance at Copmanthorpe. After scoring only 122, John Buttle 5 for 11 and Karl Youngman 4 for 4 stunned Copmanthorpe as they were dismissed for 28. Next, Burn were beaten at Cave as they were all out for 122, with John Buttle again the main destroyer with 4 for 28. Rob Page (54 not out) then saw Cave home in a tense finish by two wickets. A weakened side then defeated Heworth, who scored 167 for 3. An opening stand of 144 between Craig Hewson (65) and Charlie Cockin (74) laying the foundations. The final two matches were disappointing as Cave lost by four wickets to Clifton Alliance, before a heavy 98 run defeat with only nine men at York University Staff.

In the HPH Cup competition Cave reached the Semi-Final with easy seven wicket home wins over Heworth and Askham Bryan. Matty Share (48) and James Ferguson (52 not out) chased down Heworth’s 106 and John Buttle took 7 for 17 as Askham Bryan were all out for 38. In the Semi-Final, Burn scored 187 for 9 with Jonathan Tomlinson taking 4 for 43, before Cave were dismissed for 106.

In the Howdenshire Evening League we finished second in the East Division, behind Welton & Brough, winning 5 games, losing 3, with 2 games lost to the weather. Hemingbrough were overall Champions again beating Welton in a repeat of last year’s Play-Off Final.

James Ferguson finished top of the Saturday batting averages scoring 269 runs at an average of 38.43, ahead of Rob Page with 230 runs at 25.56. Craig Hewson was leading run scorer with 313 runs at 22.36. James also finished top of the Evening League batting with 343 runs at 68.60. John Buttle finished top of the Saturday bowling averages taking 41 wickets for 441 runs at 10.76 and Charlie Cockin took 16 wickets for 162 runs at an average of 10.13 on an evening. Rob Page also finished the season with 17 dismissals keeping wicket. James Ferguson took the Sixes award hitting 29 sixes during the campaign and also took the Catches award with 12. John Buttle won the Player of the Year award, which is based on the opposition choices for man of the match after each game.

On behalf of the club I would like to thank all our sponsors, without them we would not be able to survive and to everyone who has helped us during the season, especially Su Hodson for the fantastic teas again and Graham Mathers and John Hewson for all their efforts preparing the ground each week. It is much appreciated by us all!

Nine Man Cave Well Beaten by York Staff

Posted by Craig on September 5th, 2010

A very depleted 9 man North Cave side were well betean by 98 runs by University of York Staff in today’s final York Vale League Division 1 game of the season. Staff batted first and despite losing the early wickets of U. Syed (9) and M. Suleman (19), I. Khan (24) and S. Syed, who hit a superb error-free 116 not out, put them in control. They made the most of the gaps in the field and Syed was given good support from F. Janjua (15), A. Sadiq (12) and M. Iqbal (27 not out). The Cave bowlers valiantly plugged away, but Staff finished on 235 for 5. In reply Cave lost wickets at regular intervals and never got up with the run rate. Craig Hewson (20) and Mark Woodall (22) got the innings going and a late flourish from Andy Ferguson (38 not out) and Matty Johnson (19) got Cave to 137 all out. N. Ahmed took 4 for 68 and F. Janjua 2 for 43 to dismiss Cave.
This leaves Cave finishing the season in 3rd place in their first season in Division 1.
