Cave Rout Copmanthorpe

North Cave ran out easy winners by 94 runs in today’s York Vale League Division 1 match at Copmanthorpe. On a drying wicket Cave batted first and lost two early wickets before Craig Hewson (25) and James Ferguson (18) steadied the ship. Tom Baxter (28) added 51 with Hewson for the 4th wicket before a procession of wickets left Cave 122 all out with Darren Hughes (3 for 38) and John Hughes (4 for 17) the main destroyers. In reply the Copmanthorpe innings never got going and only M. Walker (11) reached double figures as they were routed for 28. John Buttle bowled 10 overs taking 5 for 11 with 8 maidens and Karl Youngman took 4 for 4 supported by some excellent catching from the Cave fielders.

Evening Campaign Ends With Win at Selby

North Cave finished the Howdenshire Evening League Season with a 7 wicket win away to Selby. Selby won the toss and batted first. Lee Wild and Roger Johnson (32) started well with an opening stand of 28 before Karl Youngman (2 for 26) removed Wild and Smales. Callum Dent (64 not out) was the mainstay of the innings and he took Selby to 144 for 5 off their 20 overs. John Buttle took 2 for 19 at the death. In reply Mark Woodall hit a quickfire 23 and then Chris Carr (21) and James Ferguson put on 40 for the second wicket. Ferguson carried on, hitting 62 not out, including five 6’s and six 4’s to take North Cave to victory. Cave have finished the season in second place behind Welton & Brough who will play Hemingbrough in next week’s Play-Off Final to be played at North Cave.

Wheldrake Too Strong for Ten Man Cave

Ten-man North Cave batted first in this York Vale Division 1 match at Wheldrake, but struggled to get on top of the bowling of M. Mellor (3 for 31) and D. Fern (2 for 29) and lost wickets at regular intervals. John Backhouse (13) and Richard Moore (18) got starts, but only Chris Carr (37) and Richard Tomlinson (21), who added 49 for the 6th wicket got in. The tail was dismissed by S. Ensor (3 for 24) as Cave finished on 115 all out. In reply Wheldrake lost early wickets with John Buttle (2 for 22) and Richard Tomlinson (2 for 16), but an unbroken stand of 60 between C. Walker (48 not out) and W. Freeman (23 not out) saw Wheldrake home by 6 wickets.

Welton Win Top of Table Clash

Welton came out on top in this Howden Evening League match at Cave. Welton batted first on a green track and got off to a flying start with Rob Duerden (16) and Ben Watkin (34) hitting 61 off the first 6 overs. Tom Baxter (4 for 22) helped to stem the flow and peg Welton back in the middle overs. A. Heathcote (18 not out) and Gary Chapple (22 not out) took Welton to 142 for 6 from their 20 overs. In reply Cave lost three early wickets to Tom Harrison (2 for 24) and E. Bilton (1 for 22) before Tom Baxter (19) and Rob Page (47) took Cave to the 50 mark. Two wickets in consecutive deliveries from L. Hills when he dismissed Baxter and James Ferguson put Welton in control and then Tom Foster took three wickets in one over to rip out the tail. Despite a late flurry from Andrew Ferguson, hittin three 6s in a row, Cave finished on 114 all out.

Cave Condemn Hemingbrough to First Defeat

North Cave condemned league leaders Hemingbrough to their first defeat of the season. North Cave won the toss and batted first. Mark Woodall (29) got Cave off to a fast start with support from John Backhouse (20). James Ferguson (25) and Tom Baxter (23) made useful runs, but wickets started to fall with Paul Smales (2 for 40) and Mal Walker (3 for 35) ripping out the middle order. Chris Carr (25) with support from the tail took Cave to 167 all out in the last over. Tom Collins finished with 3 for 37. In reply Hemingbrough struggled to 36 for 5 with Craig Hewson (4 for 22) and John Buttle (1 for 42) doing the damage. Tom Collins (72) batted superbly, but wickets kept falling at the other end and when he was caught by Karl Youngman off the bowling of Jonathan Tomlinson the game was lost. James Ferguson finished off the tail with 4 for 28 to restrict Hemingbrough to 122 all out and a 45 run defeat.
