Cave off to a Winning Start

Posted by Craig on April 25th, 2009

Cave got their Division 2 campaign off to a winning start with a comfortable 9 wicket win at home to Acomb. Acomb got off to a poor start losing 4 wickets for 14 runs due to a good opening spell from Tom Baxter (3 for 67 in 15 overs) and a tight spell from John Buttle (2 for 25 in 15 overs). A partnership between Brown (49) and Foster (54) got Acomb to 155 for 9, but Craig Hewson took 3 for 16 at the death to restrict the total. In reply Cave reached the total comfortably in 24 overs, following an opening stand of 99 between Craig Hewson (37) and Rob Page, who finished unbeaten on 95.

2009 Season Ahead

Posted by Craig on April 22nd, 2009

Now the snow has cleared from the ground and spring is in the air it’s time to start thinking about the forthcoming cricket season. It should be an exciting summer of cricket this year especially with the England vs Australia Ashes Series in July and August.

Our own preparations are well under way and it’s a good time for an update from the club.

Our AGM was held in September and the main award winners for last season were:
Player of the Year – James Ferguson, who also won the Saturday Batting Award and the Most Sixes. Young Player of the Year was Charlie Cockin, Mike Stellings won the Evening Bowling award for the second year running and Rob Page won the Evening Batting. John Buttle won the Saturday Bowling award and Richard Tomlinson took Most Catches.

Richard Tomlinson will continue as 1st Team Captain for the forthcoming season with Tom Baxter his Vice-Captain. Tom will also be running the evening league side with Rob Page his Vice-Captain. Our annual Presentation night will be held on Friday 27th March at the Sports and Social Club from 8.00pm. This will include a quiz and raffle and all are welcome.

Junior Cricket and Practice Sessions

As always we welcome any new members who would like to join the club – if you are interested in playing cricket for the village or if you know of anyone who is then please get in touch. Net practice sessions will begin on 2 April and will continue on each Thursday evening throughout the season.

We are particularly keen to continue the development of our junior section which we began last season with some very enjoyable and encouraging sessions. This is essential for the continuing survival of the club in years to come and to give young players the chance to join in. We are planning to run coaching sessions again for under 16’s on Sunday mornings from 10am during the season starting 3rd May. We cater for all age groups with ‘Kwik Cricket’ for the younger players up to full net practice for the older ones. By the start of the season we will have four club members who have taken the UKCC level 1 coaching course and who are all CRB checked. The club is YCB affiliated and has adopted the ECB Child Protection Policy. So if you are a young cricketer or if you just fancy having a go then please come along on any Sunday morning to join in or contact us for further details. The cost for each session is just £2.

Leagues and Fixtures

We had another very successful season last year, despite the inclement weather, winning both the York Vale League Division 3 and the Howdenshire Evening League East Division. This year we will be in Division 2 of the Saturday league which will bring new challenges for us and some new places and teams to play.

We have also entered the Drax Twenty20 competition, which is played to full Twenty20 rules with three league matches and a Finals day played at Drax later in the season. Below are the fixtures for the season to come: –
