Typically, the sun appeared just as the summer and the cricket season draws to a close. We have just completed our final league game, bringing the curtain down on another successful season for the club. The Saturday team finished as Champions of Division 4 of the HPH York Vale Cricket League and in the Howdenshire Evening League we finished top of the East Division.

North Cave joined the HPH York Vale Cricket League this year in Division 4. After a less than auspicious start when we lost our first game away at Hemingbrough, we completed the rest of the season without losing another game. Our final analysis was 13 wins, 1 defeat with 4 games lost to the weather. Promotion was only guaranteed in the last couple of games after a close fight with Sheriff Hutton and Hemingbrough. The team also made it through to the Scothern Construction Cup Final played at Heworth. Along the way we defeated Thorpe Willoughby, Thixendale and Malton & Old Malton, all from higher divisions. Unfortunately, on the day we lost to University of York Staff from Division 2.

Over the course of the season we have had some outstanding individual performances in many games. The highlights include James Ferguson scoring 93 at Hemingbrough, Craig Hewson with 92 at Pocklington, 15 year old Charlie Cockin making 82 at Tadcaster, Richard Tomlinson with a captain’s innings of 76 not out batting with the tail to win a close game at home to Woodhouse Grange and Tom Baxter with 68 not out to beat Bishopthorpe. James Ferguson finished top of the batting averages just ahead of John Backhouse who had four scores over fifty. On the bowling side John Buttle finished the season with 41 wickets followed by Tom Baxter and Jonathan Tomlinson both with 30. There were also some notable performances from the younger members of our Squad. Chris Carr (19) batted consistently throughout the season scoring 336 runs at an average of 25, while Chris Short (15) had some excellent bowling figures.

In the Howdenshire Evening League we finished top of the East Division ahead of HICE and South Cave losing only one game during the season. In the Play-off Final at North Cave we lost to Hemingbrough, who won the West Division. The outstanding performer of the season was Mike Stellings who topped the batting and bowling averages. He scored 211 runs at an average of 52.75 and took 16 wickets at 7.69. Ashley Page finished with 19 wickets at 8.53 and his brother Rob had an excellent season keeping wicket. The young age of this team has been very encouraging for the future of the club.
