Cave Finish Season with Home Win

North Cave finished the season with a home win against Middleton/North Dalton in todays York Senior League Division 4 Holderness match. Middleton won the toss and batted first. Being the final game, Cave decided to let everyone have a bowl except wicket keeper for the day Mike Stellings. Middleton got off to a good start with D. Bower (21) and T. Woodmansey (18) adding 23 for the first wicket. Cave hit back and Tom Dukes (3 for 17) and Matt Smith (2 for 4) helped reduce Middleton to 64 for 7. T. Yates (42) and S. Baker (38 not out) put on 65 to help Middleton to 153 for 8 from their 40 overs. In reply Cave got off to a poor start losing John Buttle (2) and Damian Sharp (4) with only 15 on the scoreboard. Then Charlie Cockin was bowled by T. Yates (3 for 35) for his third wicket and Cave were 30 for 3. Mike Stellings (54 not out) and Charles Parkinson (49) shared a partnership of 67 to put Cave in control. Declan Pearson (19 not out) then joined Stellings and the pair took Cave to 154 for 4 and a 6 wicket win in just 28.3 overs. Cave finished the season in 4th place in Division 4 behind Champions Cherry Burton, Beverley and Cottingham.

Cave Well Beaten at South Holderness

North Cave were well beaten in today’s York Senior League Division 4 Holderness match away at South Holderness. Cave won the toss and batted first and got off to a steady start with Matt Smith (20) and Damian Sharp (27) putting on 36 for the first wicket in 17 overs. P. Swift (1 for 13 from 10 overs) and D. Gatti (0 for 25 from 10) bowled very tight spells to keep the run rate in check. Cave slipped to 59 for 3, before a partnership of 41 between Charles Parkinson (25) and Martin Sutcliffe (13) got the innings moving. J. Ellis (2 for 47) and a run out saw Cave pegged back to 102 for 6. Tom Dukes (14 not out) pushed the Cave score up to 121 for 7 from their 40 overs. In reply the South Holderness openers made the Cave total look inadequate as M. Oliver (72 not out) and G. Chapman (27) had an opening stand of 107. John Buttle (2 for 24 from 10 overs) provided the only opposition and South Holderness reached their victory target in 28.2 overs for an 8 wicket win.

Walkington Match Abandoned

Today’s York Senior League Division 4 Holderness match at home to Walkington was abandoned due to rain and a waterlogged pitch. Cave won the toss and batted first on a damp pitch after this week’s rain. Cave got off to a good start with Matt Smith (55) and Damian Sharp (29) putting on 62 for the first wicket. Walkington hit back with two quick wickets from D. Sage (3 for 24) and Chris Cook (4 for 50) to leave Cave on 80 for 3. Charles Parkinson (21) joined Smith and the pair added 23 for the 4th wicket. Tom Dukes (10) and Ed Sheffield (12 not out) added 20, but Cave lost wickets at regular intervals to Cook and Sage and finished their 40 overs on 155 for 9. In Reply Walkington made a steady start with Chris Cook (17 not out) and D. Sage (13) putting on 29 before Craig Hewson (1 for 13) bowled Sage. At this point the rain came and became heavy and the teams left the field. The rain continued and the pitch became waterlogged and the match was abandoned.

Good Win at Leaders Cherry Burton

North Cave had a good win today away at Leaders Cherry Burton in the York Vale Division 4 match. Cherry Burton won the toss and put Cave in to bat on a difficult uneven pitch. Opener Matt Smith was hit in the face by the second delivery of the match rising from a length and had to retire hurt before coming back in later. Damian Sharp (5) and Mike Stellings got off to a steady start before Sharp was bowled by R. Wickenden (1 for 15). Stellings (62) was the main stay of the innings and he and Charlie Cockin (11) added 47 for the second wicket. Cave then lost three wickets in quick succession to leave them at 65 for 4. Declan Pearson (30) joined Stellings and the pair shared a partnership of 49 to see Cave progress to 114 for 5. Jack Wilson (3 for 15) took late wickets as Cave closed their 40 overs on 154 for 9. in reply Cherry Burton never came to terms with the pitch and lost their first wicket before a run was scored. They lost wickets at regular intervals and were never in the run chase. Declan Pearson (3 for 23 from 7 overs) took early wickets and with Mike Stellings (1 for 23 from 10 overs) kept things tight. Then Craig Hewson (4 for 9) and Pete Pearson (2 for 14) finished off the Cherry Burton tail, with Charlie Cockin taking 4 catches behind the stumps, to see Cave to victory.

Cave Win at Home to Cottingham II

North Cave had a five wicket win at home to Cottingham II in today’s York Senior League Division 4 Holderness match. Cave won the toss and put Cottingham in to bat. They struggled early on against some tight bowling from Mike Stellings (10 overs-7 maidens-6 runs-4 wickets) and Declan Pearson (7 overs-5 maidens-5 runs-0 wickets). Cottingham struggled to 20 for 4 before D. Weston (18) and Ross Parker (54) added 46 for the 5th wicket. Parker hit three sixes in his innings and with C. Pitcher (17), they put on 30 before Parker was bowled by Craig Hewson (2 for 17). John Buttle (2 for 29 from 10 overs) restricted Cottingham at the end of their innings as they reached 129 for 9 from 40 overs. In reply Matt Smith got Cave off to a good start, hitting several boundaries and with Ed Sheffield (2) they added 18 for the first wicket. Graeme Furlong (2 for 27) removed Sheffield and Tom Dukes, to leave Cave on 22 for 2. Jonathan Tomlinson (17) joined Smith and the pair put on 43 for the 3rd wicket. A. Legard (2 for 22) removed Smith and Mike Stellings (5) and Cave were reduced to 75 for 5, but then Charles Parkinson (44 not out) and Declan Pearson (14 not out) saw Cave to their victory target with 2 overs to spare. Parkinson hit 4 sixes and 3 fours in his crucial innings.
