Cave Claim First Vale League Title

North Cave claimed their first York Vale Cricket League Title with victory in the final game of the season at home to Bishopthorpe, in a winner takes all match. Bishopthorpe won the toss and batted first, but Cave’s slow bowlers got on top from the beginning, on a slow turning pitch, reducing Bishopthorpe to 6 for 3. John Buttle (3 for 18) took the three wickets, before Mike Stellings (2 for 37) and Rob Page (3 for 19) kept the pressure on. Only D. Williams (22) and B. Smith (23) offered resistance before James Windeatt (2 for 15) removed the final wickets as Bishopthorpe were bowled out for 104. In reply Mike Stellings (54 not out) and John Backhouse (15) battled through the early overs in a stand of 64, before James Windeatt (24 not out) saw Cave home by 9 wkts with 10 overs to spare.

Cave Beat Hirst in Tight Finish

North Cave won a tight match, on a damp pitch, in today’s York Vale Division 1 match at home to Hirst Courtney, by 6 runs. Hirst won the toss and put Cave into bat. Both Cave openers were dismissed with the score at 13 before Rob Page (68) and James Windeatt (51) added 100 runs for the 3rd wicket. James Wilde (4 for 17) took wickets to restrict Cave before Charlie Cockin (14 not out) and Andy Ferguson (11 not out) added late runs to take Cave to 178 for 8 from their 40 overs. In reply P. Alford (25) and N. Goddard (25) had an opening stand of 51 and then C. Lawson (27) dug in as John Buttle (2 for 24 from 12 overs) and Rob Page (2 for 26 from 12 overs) bowled 24 tight overs. Dean Howsam (35 not out) and R. Stones (38) added 65 to ensure a tense finish, but Cave came out on top as Hirst fell 6 runs short at 172 for 7.

Today’s York Vale League Division 1 match away at Wheldrake was abandoned this morning due to a waterlogged pitch after heavy rain.

Cave Slump to Home Defeat

North Cave slumped to a defeat today at home to Copmanthorpe in Division 1 of the York Vale League. North Cave batted first on a slow pitch and found the going hard against the Copmanthorpe attack. After losing three early wickets, the mainstay of the innings was a fourth wicket partnership between Mike Stellings (51) and Craig Hewson (24) which added 54. S. Sharma (3 for 37), C. Hall (2 for 31) and A. Byers (1 for 17 from 11 overs) made life difficult for Cave and took wickets at regular intervals for Copmanthorpe. Cave finally reached 125 for 7 from their 20 overs. In Reply Cave reduced Copmanthorpe to 43 for 4 with John Buttle (2 for 33) and James Windeatt (1 for 34) taking early wickets, despite S. Pradeep adding 29. Then S. Sharma (58 not out) and Martin Hillyard (25 not out) hit an unbeaten 85 to take Copmanthorpe to a six wicket win.

Cave Ease to Clifton Win

In Todays York Vale League Division 1 match, North Cave eased to victory over a plucky Clifton Alliance side including many youngsters, who put in a terrific effort. North Cave won the toss and Clifton batted first, but lost wickets at regular intervals as Tom Baxter (3 for 17) and Karl Youngman (1 for 15) took early wickets. Only Simon Cook with a defiant 43 not out offered resistance as John Buttle (3 for 18) reduced Clifton to 54 for 9. P. Thorpe (12 not out) supported Cook as the pair took Clifton to 100 for 9 from their 40 overs. In reply Cave lost Woodford early, but John Backhouse (34 not out) anchored the innings and he added 74 with Simon Cooke (45) as Cave eased to a six wicket victory. J. Butt took 2 for 8 for clifton as the young bowlers performed well.
